How SciFiOrbit ranks science fiction and fantasy books

A reader’s guide to the live index: where the books come from, how the ranking is computed, and the search operators that find exactly the shelf you want.

Where the books come from

SciFiOrbit is a live index, not a static list. Seven feeds are merged into one deduplicated set of up to 300 titles, refreshed on every visit and cached for up to six hours.

  • Open Library trending — the daily and weekly charts of what readers are opening right now.
  • Top-rated subjects — science fiction and fantasy searches sorted by rating.
  • Newest releases — fresh sci-fi and fantasy titles as they are catalogued.
  • Google Books — a second catalog, so ratings and reviews from both sources are merged.

How the ranking is computed

Ratings are averaged with an IMDb-style weighted score. A title needs roughly 30 reader votes before the page trusts its average, so a five-star rating from three votes can never outrank a genuinely popular novel.

  • Trending rank, average rating and vote count are all part of the score.
  • Only English-language fiction is kept, so manga, poetry and textbooks never pollute the shelf.
  • The Trending sort tracks what is being opened now; Top rated sorts by weighted score.
  • Every book links straight to its Open Library and Google Books records.

Search operators and filters

Type a plain title or author, or combine operators to build a precise query. Misspellings are corrected with fuzzy matching as you type.

  • author:asimov — every title by one writer.
  • genre:cyberpunk — restrict to a sub-genre.
  • year:1990 — pin a decade, or set a year range.
  • min:4.2 — require a high weighted rating.

Frequently asked questions

How does SciFiOrbit rank science fiction books?

SciFiOrbit merges Open Library trending data, top-rated subject searches, newest releases, and Google Books results into one deduplicated dataset. Books are scored with an IMDb-style weighted rating that requires a meaningful number of reader votes, so a five-star rating from three votes never outranks a genuinely popular novel.

Can I search for a specific sci-fi author or book?

Yes. The search box understands plain titles and author names, plus advanced operators: type author:name to search by author, genre:cyberpunk to filter by sub-genre, year:1990 to pin a decade, or min:4.2 to require a high rating. Misspelled queries get fuzzy suggestions.

Which sub-genres can I filter by?

Space opera, cyberpunk, dystopia, epic fantasy, urban fantasy, hard sci-fi, time travel, and dark fantasy — plus year ranges, minimum rating, and minimum vote count. Genre chips are generated live from the current dataset.

Are the book links and ratings up to date?

The page re-fetches live feeds on every visit (cached for up to six hours), and shows the exact update time plus per-source health in the status strip. All links point to Open Library and Google Books records, with a one-click web search for every title.
