For readers & ebook buyers

Read faster, know your pace, plan your finish.

ReadPace measures your real reading speed in under two minutes, then turns any book — paper or ebook — into a concrete reading plan: how many hours it needs, how many pages a day, and the exact day you'll reach the last page.

1 · Measure your reading speed

Read the passage below at your normal, comfortable pace. Tap Start, then tap I’m finished when you reach the end (the timer stops automatically after 60 seconds). A three-question comprehension check keeps the score honest.

The passage is masked until you start. Read at your normal, comfortable pace — the clock begins on the first word.

2 · How long will this book take?

Search any title (page data comes from Open Library) or type a page count, then see the total hours, the calendar days, and a finish date based on your own pace.

Enter at least 3 characters, then press Enter.

3 · Build a reading plan

Turn any book into a day-by-day plan. Tell ReadPace the page count, how much time you can read per day, and either the finish date you want or your preferred daily minutes — it schedules the rest and tracks what you check off.

Leave empty to auto-calculate.

What is a normal reading speed?

Silent reading speed depends on the material and on how much you need to retain. These are the working ranges ReadPace places your result against.

Reading situation Typical pace
Dense study or technical reading 100–150 WPM
Reading aloud / presentation pace about 150 WPM
General adult non-fiction 200–250 WPM
Comfortable fiction reading 250–300 WPM
Fast, practised reader 300–400 WPM
Contest “speed reading” 500+ WPM, usually with lower recall

A 2019 meta-analysis of reading-rate research put silent reading of English non-fiction at roughly 240 words per minute, with fiction a little faster. ReadPace keeps a conservative 200 WPM default until you take the test.

How long does it take to read a book?

ReadPace estimates from word count, allowing about 300 words per page — the same figure the Book Time calculator uses. Multiply pages by 300, then divide by your words per minute.

Your pace 200 pp 300 pp 400 pp 500 pp
150 WPM 6 h 40 10 h 13 h 20 16 h 40
200 WPM 5 h 7 h 30 10 h 12 h 30
250 WPM 4 h 6 h 8 h 10 h
300 WPM 3 h 20 5 h 6 h 40 8 h 20
400 WPM 2 h 30 3 h 45 5 h 6 h 15

Pace compounds over a long book: a 500-page history is nearly 17 hours at 150 WPM but about 8¼ hours at 300 WPM. The Book Time section works out your own figure from the page count you enter, and can lay it out as daily sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading speed measured?

ReadPace uses a timed one-minute reading of a 275-word passage. You read at your natural pace and tap Finish; your words per minute is computed from exactly how many seconds you took. A short comprehension check then adjusts your score, because fast but careless reading is not useful reading.

What is the average reading speed?

For adult fiction and general non-fiction, most readers land between 150 and 250 words per minute. 200 WPM is a common practical average for comfortable, retained reading of a paper book or ebook.

How do I estimate how long a book will take to read?

Open the Book Time section, search for the book (page counts come from Open Library) or type its page count, and enter your words per minute. ReadPace converts the word-equivalent total to hours and days, and can schedule daily sessions so you know your finish date.
