How MindGrowth ranks self-help and psychology books

A reader’s guide to the live self-help index: which feeds are merged, how the ranking stays honest, and the filters that find the right book for the habit you are building.

Where the books come from

MindGrowth merges seven live feeds into one deduplicated set of up to 300 non-fiction titles, refreshed on every visit and cached for up to six hours.

  • Open Library trending — daily and weekly charts of what self-help readers are opening.
  • Top-rated subjects — self-help and psychology, sorted by rating.
  • Newest releases — fresh personal-development titles as they appear.
  • Google Books — self-help and psychology results for a second opinion on ratings.

How the ranking stays honest

An IMDb-style weighted rating means a book needs a meaningful number of reader votes before its average is trusted. A 5-star average from a handful of votes cannot crowd out a classic that thousands have rated.

  • Only non-fiction is kept: fiction, manga and textbooks are filtered out.
  • Sort by Top rated for the weighted score, or Trending for what is being read now.
  • Set a minimum vote count to see only books with a real readership.
  • Every title links to its Open Library and Google Books records.

Topics and search operators

Live genre chips cover Habits, Psychology, Productivity, Mindfulness, Career, Relationships, Creativity and Stoicism. Combine them with operators for a precise shortlist.

  • author:clear — everything by one author.
  • genre:mindfulness — one topic only.
  • year:2010 — modern books, or any year range.
  • min:4.0 — only well-rated, well-voted titles.

Frequently asked questions

How are self-help books ranked on MindGrowth?

Every title is merged from Open Library trending feeds, top-rated subject searches, newest releases, and Google Books, then deduplicated by title and author. A weighted rating (IMDb-style) ensures books need a meaningful number of reader votes to rank high.

Can I filter by habit, psychology, or career topics?

Yes. Genre chips — Habits, Psychology, Productivity, Mindfulness, Career, Relationships, Creativity, and Stoicism — are built live from the dataset. You can also combine them with year ranges, minimum rating, and minimum vote counts.

Does the search handle authors and advanced queries?

Type a title or author naturally, or use operators: author:clear to search a specific writer, genre:mindfulness to filter a topic, year:2010 for a decade, or min:4.0 for highly rated books. Fuzzy correction catches typos.

Where do the books and ratings come from?

Open Library (trending daily/weekly, subject searches) and Google Books. The page shows the live update time and the health of every source in the status strip, and every book links to its Open Library and Google Books records.
