Unicode goes through UTF-8
Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding and decoded strictly as UTF-8 afterwards. Arbitrary binary data may not be valid text; use a file-oriented decoder for that case.
Standard versus URL-safe
Base64url replaces + and / with - and _, and commonly omits trailing = padding. The decoder accepts either alphabet but rejects malformed padding and impossible lengths.
Base64 is not encryption
Anyone can decode a Base64 string. Do not use it to hide passwords, tokens or personal data in a URL. This tool does not save its input or place it in the address bar.
