How words are counted
When available, the browser’s Unicode word segmenter handles punctuation and languages without spaces. The fallback counts runs of letters and numbers. Hyphenated words can be segmented differently by other editors.
Reading time is an estimate
The estimate uses 238 words per minute for reading and 150 for speaking. Technical density, familiarity, pauses and comprehension change the actual time. Test your own pace with ReadPace.
